After nearly two years of discussions, road patrol deputies at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office have reached an agreement on a new contract.
The Wayne County Board of Supervisors approved a four-year deal with the Teamsters union, which represents 68 deputies.
This move comes after the union previously rejected an earlier proposal and had been operating without a fresh contract for almost two years.
In addition to raising pay rates for select roles, the revised contract allows deputies to retire after 20 years, five years earlier than the previous mandate.
This adjustment reflects broader challenges in law enforcement recruitment in recent times, with departments nationwide seeking ways to attract and retain officers amidst changing perceptions and expectations of the profession.
