Overgrown, dangerous bus stop is cleaned up after Advance highlights unsafe conditions there

An overgrown and potentially dangerous bus stop has been tidied up after the Advance drew attention to it.

The chronically unkempt bus stop is at Lipsett Avenue and Hylan Boulevard in Annadale. The stop services the Tottenville-bound S59 and S78 MTA bus routes.

During a recent visit, the Advance found the bus stop choked with high weeds and other overgrowth.

The bus route numbers and the distinctive round bus logo atop a pole could be seen above the tall weeds at the stop, but the bus route information box lower on the pole was obscured by the overgrowth.

A bit of what looked like a corner and curb were visible through the overgrowth closer to Lipsett Avenue itself.

Waiting for the bus required practically standing in the roadbed of busy Hylan Boulevard itself.

Overgrowth marring the Tottenville-bound bus stop at Lipsett doesnโ€™t appear to be a recent occurrence. Google Street View images available online show overgrown conditions there as far back as 2017.

The Advance story caught the attention of Borough President Vito Fossella, who has attacked illegal dumping and has made cleanups of borough streets and open spaces a focal point of his administration.

Fossella arranged for the city Sanitation Department (DSNY) to pare back the weeds and overgrowth at the bus stop.

โ€œUpon hearing of the unsightly and unsafe conditions around the Hylan Boulevard/Lipsett Avenue bus stop, we were able to contact our friends at the Sanitation Department and ask for a little help on cleaning the site,โ€ Fossella said. โ€œNot surprisingly, and without hesitation, they agreed to send a team over.โ€

Said Fossella, โ€œWe are grateful for the issue being brought to our attention and grateful for the swift response of DSNY.โ€
