The Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame Larry Ambrosino Unsung Heroes Breakfast was in the spotlight Saturday morning, as six individuals and two organizations were honored for making a difference in the community at Li Greci’s Staaten in West Brighton
The individuals celebrated were Richard Gundacker, the late Milt Huttner, John Mattera, Gerry Mosley, Helen Settles and Bob Smith as were the Warren Jaques Memorial Committee and Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 New York.
Tony Santo, chairman of the SISHOF Committee, began the program by welcoming more than 150 people in the Imperial Room.
Lou Bergonzi, the Unsung Heroes Awards Committee co-chairman, gave the opening remarks before the presentation of the Unsung Heroes and highlighted with the following: “This event, perhaps more than others, is something that the Sports Hall of Fame is so glad to sponsor. We all cheer the heroes on the playing field, but those in the background and on the sidelines are just as important. This is just a small token of the community being able to say thank you to all of them.”
Mosley, the son of S.I. Hall of Famer Glemby Mosley (2015) and brother to Unsung Hero Gregory (2018), was ecstatic and humble after being honored.
“Receiving the Larry Ambrosino Unsung Hero award was a double honor for me,” Mosley said. “Larry was one of my mentors and seeing my name and his on the same plaque was a surprise.”
“I think what made it even more special was seeing how proud Larry’s wife, Dorothy (Ambrosino), was looking on, like I was one of her own sons. Adding Derek Alvez, Mark Washington and Tony Marcigliano to the equation and knowing how her husband’s influence was on all four of us.”
