Good samaritan, motorcyclist both dead after Newfield accident

A tragic accident on Elmira Road in Newfield claimed the lives of two men late Friday evening.

Patrick Robinson, 42, of Ithaca, was operating his motorcycle when he lost control due to slippery conditions, causing him to lay the bike down.

Mathew J. Poplawski, 34, of Schenectady, witnessing the accident, stopped to assist Robinson.

However, while Poplawski was trying to help, both men were struck by another vehicle. Authorities pronounced both Robinson and Poplawski dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle, a 57-year-old man from Illinois, is actively cooperating with the New York State Police.

Preliminary investigations suggest that alcohol was not a contributing factor to the accident. The investigation remains active.
