Help for problem sports gamblers is available

If you blinked, you might have missed it during any of the glitzy commercials for mobile sports gambling featuring Peyton Manning and other celebrities.

But itโ€™s there, as required by New York State, on every commercial: information on how to get help for an addiction to sports gambling.

In the first year that mobile sports betting was legal in New York State, residents lost $4 million a day on their bets. This year, that number has risen to about $5.3 million a day, according to the state Council on Problem Gambling.

The state hotline number for people with gambling problems is 877-8-HOPENY or 877-846-7369. It is a 24-hour hotline manned by mental health professionals who can provide crisis intervention support, information on problem gambling and free and confidential help on how to access the stateโ€™s gambling treatment centers.

Callers can learn about the stateโ€™s voluntary exclusion program. They can file paperwork to get themselves banned from gambling at any casino in New York, or with any of the nine state-licensed providers of mobile sports gambling.

The mobile sports betting companies licensed in New York will also work with customers to help them set up financial limits on their gambling.
