North Shore Rotary hosts adult spelling bee: Team CHASI spells victory in support of children’s literacy

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Team Community Health Action of Staten Island (CHASI) reigned victorious at the North Shore Rotary’s Inaugural Adult Spelling Bee, an event designed to support the club’s Literacy Project. The spelling challenge was held at LiGreci’s Staaten, West Brighton, on Oct. 19, 2023.

The spelling bee unfolded over three rounds, with the first elimination occurring in the second round, narrowing the field of contenders.

“Team CHASI, a trio of Jenny Lytton, Jazmin Puentes, and Emilie Tippins, maintained an unbroken record of success, demonstrated unwavering dedication and a flair for language that earned them the championship trophy and bragging rights,” added Wilkinson. “In a dramatic finale, they out spelled the Surmanek Wealth Management Team, securing their victory with Jenny Lytton’s flawless spelling of ‘philharmonic.’

“Their tenacity and precision delivered the final blow to their opponents, a team of educators, who had faltered with the word ‘plagiarism.’”

Surmanek Wealth Management, represented by Natalie Russo, Melissa Surmanek, and Victoria Tanico, finished in second place, while Team Williams Eye Works, comprised of Debra…
