Minivan crashes into Syracuse apartment building

Syracuse, N.Y. — A minivan crashed into a Syracuse apartment building Sunday evening, severely damaging its front porch.

Officers from the Syracuse Police Department responded around 10 p.m. to the 100 block of West Beard Avenue in the city’s South Side, according to logs from the Onondaga County 911 center.

The woman who lived in one of the apartments said the Chrysler Town and Country pulled into the building’s driveway just as she was arriving home for the night. She then heard a loud bang once she was inside, and found that the driver had backed up incorrectly and mowed into the building.

The crash cleaved the stairs and part of the railing off the porch, and also tore down some of the gutters.

It was unclear whether there were any injuries.

She said a 14-year-old girl was driving her grandmother’s car, and had been caught before by the police taking it out.

“The grandmother must have fallen asleep, because what grandmother is up after 9pm, and they stole the van again,” she said.

She lamented local teenagers taking out cars, especially before they know how to drive.

“These kids are just running amok,” she said.
