Decision on Hamburg asphalt plant expected Wednesday night

The operator of a proposed asphalt plant in Hamburg “abandoned its responsibility” to the environmental review process, according to the final environmental report.

The town Planning Board will issue its determination on the project Wednesday night. If the final environmental impact statement approved earlier this month is any indication, the decision is likely to go against AL Asphalt Corp.

The company did not supply sufficient information to the Planning Board, and some information contained inconsistencies, according to the impact statement, and the company “has made it impossible for the Planning Board to take a hard look at the potential environmental impacts of the project as required.”

The Planning Board tried to address the deficiencies in the company’s submission, but it “remains critically deficient,” and the board concluded in the impact statement that it cannot say whether adverse environmental impacts will be avoided or minimized. The town received more than 150 comments on the project during the public comment period.

AL Asphaltย filed an application in June 2019 to build the hot mix asphalt plant.
