The New York Mets are actively searching for the team’s next manager.
They’ve already interviewed Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza, reported The New York Post’s Joel Sherman on Wednesday, and Cubs bench coach Andy Green. They’re also set to interview Craig Counsell, according to The Post’s Jon Heyman.
Now it appears A’s manager Mark Kotsay could also be “in the mix” for the gig, wrote SNY’s Andy Martino, who also reported that the team will make a managerial hire within a week, on Thursday.
Kotsay has managed Oakland for two seasons, since 2022. In that time, the Athletics had a 110-214 record (.340 win percentage).
He played 17 big league seasons across seven teams, spending the most time with the Padres (four years), Marlins (four years) and the A’s (four years). In 7,110 career plate appearances, he slashed .276/.332/.404 with 127 home runs and 98 stolen bases.
He made the postseason with three different teams – A’s, Red Sox and Brewers – as a player, making it to the Championship Series each time. He never made a World Series appearance in his career.
The Mets are also looking at Kotsay.
Kotsay was the manager when Yankees’ Domingo German pitched a perfect game against Oakland in June. He intimated that his players helped the troubled pitcher become the 24th MLB player in history to throw a perfect game.
“Obviously, you tip your cap to the performance,” Kotsay said, via Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media. “The kid did an amazing job of keeping us off balance all night and we didn’t do a good job of making an adjustment.”
