The NBA In-Season Tournament tips off for its inaugural run on Friday as the Association’s new annual tournament for all 30 teams.
The two-stage tournament, which runs through Dec. 9, will consist of the group stage and knockout stage, which culminates with the championship game at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
How the NBA In-Season Tournament works
The 30 teams were randomly selected into six groups of five within their conference based on how they finished last year in the regular season. From Friday through Nov. 28, a team will play each group opponent once in what the NBA has leveled “Tournament Nights.”
East Group A | East Group B | East Group C | West Group A | West Group B | West Group C |
Philadelphia 76ers | Milwaukee Bucks | Boston Celtics | Memphis Grizzlies | Denver Nuggets | Sacramento Kings |
Cleveland Cavaliers | New York Knicks | Brooklyn Nets | Phoenix Suns | Los Angeles Clippers | Golden State Warriors |
Atlanta Hawks | Miami Heat | Toronto Raptors | Los Angeles Lakers | New Orleans Pelicans | Minnesota Timberwolves |
Indiana Pacers | Washington Wizards | Chicago Bulls | Utah Jazz | Dallas Mavericks | Oklahoma City Thunder |
Detroit Pistons | Charlotte Hornets | Orlando Magic | Portland Trail Blazers | Houston Rockets | San Antonio Spurs |
The best team in each group automatically advances while two more wild card teams — clubs with the best record who finished second in their group — advance to the knockout stage. That’s a total of eight teams that will move on.
The knockout round is single elimination beginning with the quarterfinals and ending with the championship game.
