Pols are human, too

This time of the campaign season, candidates worry about committing the kind of embarrassing gaffe that can cost them votes.

Brian Nowak, the Democrat running for Cheektowagaย  supervisor, is leaning into some of his mistakes.

The Nowak campaign created a 17-second outtakes ad from a video recorded near Cheektowaga Town Park on Aug. 24, campaign manager Jessica Schuster said.

The team was looking for extra content for Facebook ads and thought about using the flubs from the session.

Schuster said a lot of political ads end up looking the same and they wanted to differentiate themselves and show some of Nowak’s authentic personality.

Her goal is, she quipped: “Make politicians human again.”

A video editor cut a blooper reel and, Schuster said, “We were laughing at it for a solid two hours.”

In it, Nowak starts with, “I’m Brian Nowak,” before apparently questioning the validity of that statement.ย 

“I am, but …” the next segment starts, before it, too, cuts off.

“I’d be honored to have your support this year,” he said, before starting to laugh because, “my gut was out.”

“My gut’s always out,” he observed.

He attempts to leave before crew members caution these takes won’t work for a formal ad.

“Brian Nowak for Supervisor,” the outtake ad ends, “because Brian will never be an actor.”

A scary initiative

It had to be a ghoulish and ghastly sight for neighbors when Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns went trick-or-treating on Tuesday.

That’s because instead of dressing up in freaky costume and hauling a bag of candy, he and a group of government officials from across the county visited six “zombie” homes in five communities. They scared them up as examples of how mortgage lenders or servicers are complyingย โ€“ or rather, not complyingย โ€“ with a state law that requires them to take care of vacant and abandoned homes that they effectively control through delinquent mortgages.
