Congressman Ryan brings CARES Van to Ulster

KINGSTON- Congressman Pat Ryan is bringing assistance from the Social Security Administration back to Ulster County with an event with his Constituent Advocacy Resources Empowerment Services (C.A.R.E.S.) Van.

The event will be held this Thursday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ulster County Restorative Justice and Community Empowerment Center located at 733 Broadway in Kingston. Staff from the Social Security Administration will join Ryanโ€™s caseworkers to answer questions and assist constituents with accessing their benefits.

โ€œFor too long, Ulster County seniors have gone without the critical services provided by a Social Security office. I hear from people all the time who arenโ€™t able to make the hour-plus drive to the nearest office, and canโ€™t get the help they need online,โ€ย said Ryan.ย  โ€œI will keep pushing to restore the much-needed services provided by a permanent Social Security Office.โ€

In March, Ryan wrote a letter to Acting Social Security Administration Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi to demand the reopening of the Kingston Social Security Office and Congressman Ryanโ€™s staff has since held multiple meetings with Social Security Administration leaders to progress on the effort.ย  The Social Security Administrationโ€™s satellite office in the Town of Ulster closed in 2018, leaving Ulster County residents in need of direct assistance traveling upwards of an hour to the nearest Social Security Office located in Poughkeepsie.

Other community partners will also be present at the event to offer assistance to attendees and currently include:

  • New York State Attorney Generalโ€™s Office
  • New York State Comptrollerโ€™s Office
  • New York State Senator Michelle Hincheyโ€™s Office
  • Ulster County Office for the Aging
  • Legal Services of Hudson Valley
  • Westchester Medical Center
  • Alzheimerโ€™s Association
  • Mental Health Association in Ulster County
  • American Red Crossย

Attendees are encouraged to RSVP viaย this link, but RSVP is not required to attend.
