Whiting Door recommended for $595,000 in funding

Whiting Door is poised to receive $595,000 from a state economic development fund, to support a planned $3.9 million expansion of its Akron manufacturing facility.

The Western New York Power Proceeds Allocation Board has recommended the funding for Whiting Door’s project. The New York Power Authority board of trustees, which has the final say over the allocations, will take up the recommendation at its Dec. 12 meeting.

Whiting Door makes roll-up and swing doors for the commercial freight and transportation industries. The company is preparing to supply roll-up doors to an unidentified customer who has won a $428 million contract to make 50,000 to 165,000 zero-emission and low-emission vehicles for a government agency, according to the allocation board.

Whiting Door plans to complete its expansion by 2025, a project that will add 25 jobs and retain two jobs. The company will add 20,000 feet of manufacturing and warehouse space.

Power proceeds funds come from the sale of unused hydropower from the Niagara Hydroelectric Power Plant.
