Greta Anderson, ice cream shop matriarch, dies at 105

Greta Anderson lived to 105, long enough to see the ice cream stand she opened with her husband, Carl, become a tradition for generations of Western New York families.

The matriarch of the family that built Andersonโ€™s Frozen Custard died Nov. 8, with two generations of descendants minding the store.

Before the Andersons decided to build their Tonawanda store in 1953, Sheridan Drive was a semi-rural thoroughfare where Carl occasionally hunted pheasant. From their vantage point at 2235 Sheridan Drive, the Andersons saw the community grow in proportion to the lines of customers stretching into the parking lot.

Today, Andersonโ€™s has six locations, and a role in the lives of doting grandparents, dating teenagers and desperate parents across the region.
