Erie County DA John Flynn to resign, may step down in early 2024

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn won’t seek re-election and may step down from his position early next year before his term is over at the end of 2024, he told The Buffalo News.

His announcement comes amid recent news that Rep. Brian Higgins is leaving Congress before the end of his term and the possibility being floated that Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown could resign early, possibly to run for Congress or become the next president of SUNY Buffalo State University.

“It is not a closed case, and it’s still open right now. I already have spoken to the police and they have reviewed all the materials and we are at a standstill, unless we get some new evidence,” Flynn said Wednesday.

If Flynn steps aside, it would clear a path for Michael J. Keane, his first deputy district attorney, to succeed him.
