Big Ditch Brewing Co. is fermenting plans to open a brewery and taproom at the historic former post office in Lockport, the third in its partnership with Amherst-based Iskalo Development Corp.
Iskalo is nearing completion of a full renovation of the 1902 building at 1 East Ave., Lockport, and the new Big Ditch Brewing Tap Room is on track to open there by the middle of next year, Big Ditch said.
Western New York is now home to more than 60 craft breweries and brewery-owned taprooms, helping to make New York the fourth-largest craft beer producing state in America. The statewide economic impact exceeds $5 billion.
โIn our discussions with area officials, itโs clear that there is a need for a venue such as ours in the city,โ said Matt Kahn, Big Ditchโs president and co-founder. โThe proximity of this location to the Erie Canal, which our brewery is named after, makes this a perfect fit for our next Tap Room destination.โ
The new location is independent from a years-long quest to create a destination brewery on Transit Road adjacent to the Thruway. That plan, also developed with Iskalo, would have resulted in a 105,000-square-foot facility capable of brewing 50,000 barrels of beer a year.
