Newfield man is 13th suspect indicted in Thomas Rath kidnapping, murder case

In a developing case surrounding the abduction and murder of Thomas Rath from Ithaca earlier this year, a 13th suspect has now been charged.

New York State Police announced that David Maycumber, 41, of Newfield, has been indicted by a Tioga County Grand Jury on multiple felony charges. These charges include first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and intimidating a witness.

The investigation into Rath’s disappearance began on May 20 when he was forcibly taken from a homeless encampment known as “the jungle.” The case was deemed suspicious by the Ithaca Police Department on May 26. A significant breakthrough occurred on May 31 when a search warrant was executed at a home on Benjamin Hill Road in Newfield. This led to a large-scale search on June 2nd and the execution of over 40 search warrants at various locations. Rath’s remains were eventually discovered on August 3 in a shallow grave on state game lands in Candor, Tioga County.

The arrests in this case began on August 16, with ten individuals initially taken into custody, followed by three more in subsequent months.

The list of those arrested and charged in connection with Rath’s kidnapping and murder now includes David C. Maycumber, Joseph M. Howell, Colleen E. Dillon, Kysha S. Radcliff, Jonathan Glennon, Angelo Baez, Zayne G. Burlingame, Mark F. Beatty, Robert W. Hines, Neraida A. Sobrado-Torres, Jack J. Benjamin Jr., Brelynn B. Vorrasi, and Justin M. Knapp. Each faces charges ranging from first-degree murder to kidnapping, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn considerable attention in the region.
