MONTICELO- For the first time since the pandemic on Thursday the Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless offered a sit-down turkey dinner to anyone who wanted to have a hot meal.ย Preparation was underway for days, with volunteers prepared to provide meals to as many as 75 guests.
There were roles, stuffing, desserts, and of course turkey. Volunteerism and financial support are
the backbone of organizations like the Federation for the Homeless.
Steve Kaufman is one of the volunteers who helped prepare and serve the food.ย โWe look forward to these special days like today, to give back to the community,โ he said.
Preparations started on Monday, four days before Thanksgiving.ย Mike Steinbeck has been cooking for the event for the past 1o years and speaking to this yearโs menu, he said, โWe have stuffing, turkey, yams, everything you could want.โ
Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther was among the volunteers who helped serve on Thursday.ย She has volunteered at the event for years, and said she was grateful members of the community who may not have cooking facilities could come, sit down, and enjoy a good meal.
โYesterday, people picked up food, to be able to make it at home, but there are a lot of people that donโt have living conditions where they can cook or anything,โ said Gunther.ย โSo, as you see, we set up the tables, itโs like a family thing.โ
