POUGHKEEPSIE – An afternoon fire on Gifford Avenue was blocked from becoming a tragedy by the Poughkeepsie Fire Department on Thanksgiving.
City 911 had received multiple reports of a house fire around 1:30 p.m. With some of the fire department wrapping up a previous call for service, the remaining crews responded, along with city cops.
A City of Poughkeepsie police sergeant was first on the scene and reported heavy smoke coming out of the house. He also indicated that all occupants were accounted for.
The previously deployed fire crews finished their original assignment and joined their coworkers at the scene.
A fire engine and crew from the Fairview Fire Department also responded and positioned their rig near the hydrant at Gifford Avenue And Washington Street.
The fire was located in the rear of the third floor of the multifamily dwelling.
The firefighters had the bulk of the fire knocked down within 15 minutes of arriving on the scene.
The initial investigation indicates that the fire was possibly the result of an electrical issue in or near the refrigerator.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
