Dump truck driver strikes and kills 77-year-old pedestrian in Midwood

The driver of a truck fatally struck a 77-year-old pedestrian as she crossed the street in Midwood on Monday morning, according to police.

Cops said the woman was crossing the intersection of East 19th Street and Avenue P just after 9:10 a.m. when she was struck by a red dump truck.

Officers from the 66th precinct arrived on the scene to find the 77-year-old lying in the roadway, unconscious and unresponsive. Paramedics rushed to the scene, where they pronounced the victim dead, an NYPD spokesperson said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 43-year-old man, remained on the scene, and no arrests have been made. The truck appears to be owned by the C. Francis Construction Corporation, and records compiled by How’s My Driving NY show that the truck has received three school zone speed camera violations since 2021 — including one in Brooklyn last June. 

Police did not release the identity of the deceased victim, pending proper family notification.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.

According to CrashMapper, the intersection where Monday’s incident occurred has seen at least seven crashes over the past five years, which resulted in multiple injuries to pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists. 

Brooklyn has seen a spate of deadly crashes this month alone — least six people have been injured in hit-and-runs in November, and four have died, including the victim of Monday’s crash. Several victims were seniors — on Nov. 16, a 72-year-old woman was hit and killed while crossing the street in Fort Hamilton, while a 79-year-old grandmother was fatally struck in Crown Heights on Nov. 3.
