Man who shot 3 Palestinian students in Vermont has New York connection, police chief says

Burlington, VT — A man who has been charged with shooting three college students of Palestinian descent in Vermont this weekend has ties to Syracuse, Burlington, Vt. police chief said at a news conference Monday.

The man, Jason J. Eaton, 48, recently arrived in Burlington from Syracuse, Police Chief Jon Murad said. He said they would be looking more into his Syracuse area connections.

Public records show a man by the same name working for several financial advising firms in the Syracuse area over the past 17 years.

A man by the same named is currently listed as living on James Street in Syracuse.

Eaton faces three counts of attempted murder after he allegedly shot the three college students.

The three men, all 20, were walking during a visit to the home of one of the victim’s relatives when they were confronted by a white man with a handgun, police said.

“Without speaking, he discharged at least four rounds from the pistol and is believed to have fled,” Murad said. “All three victims were struck, two in their torsos and one in the lower extremities.”

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick said that Eaton does not have a local criminal history. The only record of Eaton interacting with police stemmed from a 911 call from an ex-girlfriend in DeWitt.

In October 2019, the woman reported that Eaton was inappropriately contacting her after she had asked him to leave her alone. The messages were not threatening, Fitzpatrick said. She did not want to press charged but police spoke to Eaton to make sure he stopped contacting her.

A man with the same name and age is shown working for Cadaret, Grant & Co. in Liverpool from 2006 through 2012, then Edward Jones in East Syracuse from 2018 to 2019, and at TD Ameritrade in Fayetteville from 2019 to 2021 before going to Cusco Financial Services, according to FINRA’s web site.
