ESL Federal Credit Union has made a significant impact on the Greater Rochester community by awarding 82 grants totaling $3.9 million to local organizations in the third quarter of 2023.
These grants support critical services and programs that benefit individuals and families in the area. Ajamu Kitwana, Vice President and Director of Community Impact at ESL Federal Credit Union, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving the best outcomes for the community. The ESL Community Impact team focuses on expanding individual opportunities through quality education and employment, building strong and connected neighborhoods, and enhancing the capabilities of local organizations.
One of the notable beneficiaries of ESLโs philanthropy is the Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC). The college received a $100,000 grant for its Student Emergency Services, providing crucial support to students facing financial hardships. According to Brie Chupalio, Interim Chief Advancement Officer and Acting Executive Director of the FLCC Foundation, the grant allows students to apply discreetly for up to $1,000 for unexpected financial needs, aiding them in staying focused on their academic goals. The funding has positively impacted retention rates by helping students overcome financial barriers and remain enrolled.
Other significant projects funded by ESL include the Geneva Family YMCAโs โBuilding What Mattersโ Capital Improvement Project, which received $75,000. This renovation will create new spaces for fitness, childcare, social activities, and an innovations lab for middle school students. Additionally, the Wood Library Association was awarded $10,000 for creating The Reading Garden at Wood Library, which aims to transform an unused outdoor area into a public garden and outdoor programming space.
