Finger Lakes gas prices decline over holiday weekend, but remain above national average

Gas prices in the Finger Lakes region experienced a notable decline during the Thanksgiving week, offering a slight reprieve to travelers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

According to AAA, the average gas price in the Finger Lakes region fell to $3.65 per gallon, a four-cent decrease. Despite this drop, the regionโ€™s prices remain higher than the national average, which stands at $3.25 per gallon.

This national average saw a more significant decrease of six cents during the same week.

Over the past month, there has been a consistent downward trend in gas prices both locally and nationally. The Finger Lakes region has seen a 16-cent reduction in gas prices, while the national average has decreased by 27 cents.

AAA noted that this decline in gas prices has been beneficial for Thanksgiving travelers, with an estimated 49.1 million people driving over 50 miles from home during the holiday week. Experts from AAA suggest that an increase in gas prices is unlikely in the near future, as gas prices typically tend to be lower during the winter months.

Comparing gas prices in different regions of upstate New York on Monday, Rochesterโ€™s prices were found to be one cent lower than Buffalo but seven cents higher than Syracuse. Elmira reported the lowest gas prices in the area, with an average of $3.32 per gallon.
