Syracuse, N.Y. — Georgia assistant coach Fran Brown has emerged as a top target to fill Syracuse football’s head-coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports.
Brown, a New Jersey native, has spent the past two seasons coaching the defensive backs for the two-time national champions.
He’s regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiters, helping the Bulldogs hold the No. 1 spot in 247Sports’ 2024 recruiting rankings.
Syracuse would be Brown’s first head-coaching job. He
Brown, 41, previously coached the secondary at Rutgers from 2020-21 under Greg Schiano and also coached at Temple and Baylor under former coach Matt Rhule.
Brown began working at Temple in 2011 as an ops director under Steve Addazio. He left to join Rhule’s staff at Baylor in 2017 and returned to Temple to serve as co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach under Rod Carey in 2019.
Brown’s rising candidacy was reported by The Athletic and ESPN.
The news comes hours after ESPN reported a decision on Syracuse’s next coach was close to being finalized.
In addition to Brown, Holy Cross coach Bob Chesney and Toledo coach Jason Candle are among the candidates the school is considering, according to ESPN.
