Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse is finalizing a deal that will make Fran Brown its next head football coach, two sources with knowledge of the agreement told syracuse.com late Monday night.
Brown, the defensive backs coach at Georgia, emerged as a top target in the search to replace Dino Babers, who was fired Nov. 19 with one game remaining in the Orange’s regular season.
Brown, 40, is regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiters, helping the Bulldogs hold the No. 1 spot in 247Sports’ 2024 recruiting rankings.
Syracuse would be Brown’s first head-coaching job.
Brown interviewed with Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack on Sunday in Atlanta, according to a source with knowledge of the meeting. The two spoke several times since then, the source said.
Brown’s rising candidacy was reported by The Athletic, ESPN and other national media earlier Monday night.
Holy Cross head coach Bob Chesney and Toledo coach Jason Candle were also finalists for the job, according to ESPN.
