STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Gone but not forgotten.
Golden’s Deli was a beloved Staten Island restaurant for years until it closed in 2012.
One of the signature features of the eatery, besides its top-notch Jewish delicacies, was a real New York City subway car inside that was outfitted as a dining space.
When Golden’s closed its doors for the last time, many Staten Islanders wondered whatever happened to that fabled subway car.
We’ve tracked it down for you.
The train is now at the home of art installer and train aficionado and collector Tom Zoufaly, 69, in Warwick, N.Y.
Zoufaly bought the train for $15,000 and has totally restored it to its former glory.
“Doesn’t every kid want to have his own train?” Zoufaly told the Advance.
Zoufaly grew up in Queens and rode the subway as a youth. He has since become a collector of trains and train and mass transit memorabilia.
The Golden’s car, which was in dilapidated condition after being stored outside, was brought to Warwick on a flatbed truck.
The truck had to maneuver backwards down Zoufaly’s driveway and then a crane had to lift the Golden’s car and place it on a concrete platform where the train was then painstakingly restored.
Zoufaly even built a mock subway platform, including the names of train stations of his youth, to go along with the Golden’s car.
