TOWN OF WAPPINGER – A special meeting of the Wappinger Town Board, arranged by three members of the council for Monday evening, was canceled at the last minute.
A source told Mid-Hudson News that the meeting was planned by Councilman Al Casella, who is not authorized to do so under town law. Casella allegedly tried to call the meeting with the support of fellow board members Angela Bettina and Chris Phillips.
Special meetings of the town board can only be called for by the supervisor or deputy supervisor.
The meeting agenda was to vote to file an appeal of a recent supreme court decision ruling Casella and Phillips had illegally conducted town business in executive session. The town has been ordered to reimburse the plaintiff for a portion of his legal fees encumbered while suing the town.
Town Supervisor Dick Thurston did not plan to attend Monday’s meeting and is believed to be opposed to filing the appeal. Deputy Town Supervisor William Beale was unable to attend the meeting and had not agreed to call for the meeting.
Casella allegedly decided late Monday afternoon that he would not show up for the meeting and it was canceled.
The town’s email subscription service sent notification of the cancellation at 6:10 p.m.
