Ithaca’s historic ‘Red House’ hits the market for $299K

The iconic “Red House,” located at 408 North Tioga Street in Ithaca, has been officially put up for sale with an asking price of $299,000. This move comes after the Tompkins County Legislature decided against incorporating the property into its future Center of Government plans.

The 1870s Victorian home, known for its significant historical value, is now on the market, offering a unique restoration opportunity just north of the Ithaca Commons and within proximity to the Tompkins County Court House.

Listed as a 3,732 square foot property, the Red House currently features no bedrooms and four half bathrooms. The sale is on an ‘as is’ basis, though there will be a relocation of the electric service to the south side of the property by NYSEG at the County’s expense. The building, which has served as professional offices for decades and lacks a kitchen, presents potential for residential conversion. This perspective aligns with Historic Ithaca’s vision, emphasizing the need for more residential spaces in the city.

Historic Ithaca’s executive director, Susan Holland, expressed gratitude to the Tompkins County Legislature for its decision to sell the property, viewing it as a positive step towards both preservation and community development. The listing highlights the property’s notable features, including tall windows, original plaster medallions, ornate ceilings, and a classic banister, making it an attractive project for restoration enthusiasts. The sale process will remain open for offers until 3 pm on December 15th, presenting a significant opportunity for investors or individuals interested in revitalizing a piece of Ithaca’s history.
