STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The NYPD is expected to shrink to the smallest it has been in decades, according to a recent report by the New York Post.
A total of 2,516 NYPD cops have fled the force thus far this year, as noted in the Nov. 25 report. Pension data obtained by the Post reveals this marks the fourth highest number in the past 10 years and 43% more than the 1,750 who left the NYPD in 2018, a time before the pandemic and a surge in crime.
When combined with the city’s plans to cancel the next five police classes (a move brought upon by budget cuts due to the migrant crisis), this mass exodus will diminish the force to record lows, according to the Post. Mayor Eric Adams’ planned budget cuts will reduce the NYPD to 29,000 officers by the end of fiscal year 2025 — the lowest force numbers since the mid-90s, as indicated in the report.
