The court appearance of Brian Scanlan, the newly elected Cayuga County Clerk, has been delayed following his involvement in a hit-and-run accident in Owasco earlier this month.
According to The Citizen, he was scheduled to appear in Owasco Town Court on Tuesday for the incident, which involved crashing into a parked car and leaving the scene.
Scanlan’s case has been adjourned to December 12. This postponement was announced via a note on the town hall’s door, indicating the adjournment of all cases for that evening.
In the wake of the November 11 crash, Joe Camardo, the homeowner at the crash site, has requested Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate. She declined the request.
Camardo, expressing dissatisfaction with the investigation’s progress, cited potential gaps in the probe, including unanswered questions about Scanlan’s activities before the crash, such as whether he had been drinking or using drugs, and the presence of law enforcement officials at a nearby party, according to The Citizen’s reporting.
Despite frustrations voiced by Camardo and Grome Antonacci regarding witness uncooperativeness, the Fifth Amendment protects individuals from being compelled to speak with law enforcement.
The parked car, owned by Dr. Cyndy King, was reportedly a total loss. Scanlan, an independent candidate endorsed by the Cayuga County Democratic Committee, won the county clerk’s race in a three-way contest on November 7 and is set to succeed Sue Dwyer in January.
