Local first responders from Cayuga County are credited with going above-and-beyond — transporting a critically ill patient from Auburn Community Hospital to Albany Medical Center. The incident was detailed in a recent Facebook post by the Fleming Fire Department.
The crew had responded to a call on West Lake Road at approximately 10:31 p.m. on November 27 where they treated a male patient with a laceration and transported him to Auburn Community Hospital (ACH) without incident. It was after this routine response that the crew’s night took an unexpected turn.
Upon their arrival at ACH, the Fleming ambulance crew learned of a critical patient in the emergency room requiring immediate transfer to a specialized facility. The patient was suffering from an intracranial hematoma and multiple pulmonary embolisms, conditions necessitating advanced medical care. With no local staffed ambulance agencies or medevac units available to facilitate the transfer, the situation was dire.
Understanding the severity of the patient’s condition, the Fleming crew volunteered to transport the patient to Albany Medical Center, ensuring access to the required higher level of care. Completing the mission in the early hours of the morning, the crew returned to service at around 6:00 AM, just in time to attend to their regular jobs and family responsibilities.
This selfless act by the volunteers of Fleming Ambulance exemplifies their unwavering commitment to serving their community, even beyond the call of duty.
