Ex-Yankees pitcher says goodbye to Bronx in emotional message

Luis Severino said goodbye to Yankees fans in an emotional Instagram post on Friday.

“I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your love and support over these last 12 unforgettable years,” Severino wrote beneath a slideshow of pictures of him in Yankee pinstripes.

“As a young boy growing up in the Dominican Republic as a Yankee fan, I could only dream of what it would be like to play the game that I love professionally at the MLB level and earn the opportunity to don the famous pinstripes,” he continued. “In 2011, my dreams became a reality when the New York Yankees organization took a chance on me and gave me and my family the opportunity of a lifetime by signing me as an international free agent.”

Severino made his Yankees debut in 2015, emerging as the ace of the staff in 2017 and 2018 before a slew of injuries kept him off the field. In his first 96 games (85 starts), the Dominican Republic native posted a 41-25 record with a 3.51 ERA and 572 strikeouts over 518 innings, a 9.9 strikeouts per nine rate, earning him two All-Star nods.

Since then, he’s spent six different stints on the injured list, including an extended leave after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June 2020.

In 2023, Severino had his worst season in a Yankees uniform, all but securing his fate — or lack thereof — with the team. In 19 games (18 starts) he posted career worsts in ERA (6.65), WHIP (1.65), strikeouts per nine (8.0), hits per nine (11.4) and home runs per nine (2.3). His 4-8 record is his worst since 2016 when he went 3-8 in 22 games (11 starts)

Still, Severino will remember his time in the Bronx fondly.

“Together, we have all shared amazing memories that I will always cherish and it has truly been an honor and a privilege to have played for one of the greatest organizations in the world,” Severino wrote.
