Syracuse hung tough for about the first 18 minutes of action, but lights-out shooting from Virginia resulted in an 84-62 blowout loss for the Orange, snapping a two-game win streak and dropping to 5-3 on the season.
The game was knotted at 17 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but the Cavaliers went on a 20-7 run to take a 37-24 lead into the locker room. Syracuse didn’t respond much in the second half as Virginia went on another run and cruised to a victory.
JJ Starling led the Orange with 16 points, Maliq Brown poured in 10, and Quadir Copeland added eight. Judah Mintz was held to a season-low five points on 2-for-8 shooting.
Syracuse shot 41% as a team, including 25% from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Virginia converted on 12-of-21 three-pointer attempts and shot 55% overall.
The Orange return to action Tuesday when they host Cornell at 8 p.m.
