Syracuse, N.Y. – Texas A&M’s interim head coach Elijah Robinson is departing the Aggies to become Syracuse football’s defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports.
TexAgs.com’s Billy Liucci was the first to report the news Sunday evening.
Robinson worked with new Orange head coach Fran Brown at Temple and Baylor. The two share a hometown in Camden, New Jersey.
On Friday, a Syracuse class of 2024 commit told syracuse.com Brown said on a Zoom call that the Orange’s defensive coordinator would be coming from the SEC.
Robinson will replace Rocky Long, the guru of the 3-3-5 defense who’d been hired as SU’s defensive coordinator last December following Tony White’s departure for Nebraska.
Robinson has been at Texas A&M since 2018 and took over as interim head coach when Jimbo Fisher was fired with two games to go in the regular season.
He’s coached defensive line all six seasons with the Aggies. In 2022, he was promoted to also be an assistant head coach and run game coordinator.
Robinson also coached defensive line at Baylor (2017) and Temple (2014-16).
Prior to those stints, he coached at his alma mater, Penn State, and served as a director of community relations and NFL liaison.
Robinson had been a player at Penn State under coach Joe Paterno from 2004-06 before suffering a career-ending neck injury during spring practice in 2007, just as he was shifting from defensive tackle to compete for a starting spot on the offensive line.
Texas A&M was a top 10 defense this season, coming in at No. 9 in the FBS in total defense.
It finished No. 17 in rushing defense, allowing an average of just 106.7 yards per game and 3.27 yards per carry, and No. 20 in passing yards allowed.
The Aggies had the third-most sacks in the country (42) for a total 248 yards lost.
Robinson was the second-highest paid defensive line coach in the country, according to USA Today’s college football salary database. He was salaried at $1.2 million in 2023.
