SUNY Fredonia will cut 13 programs as low student enrollment continues

SUNY Fredonia is facing significant changes as it proposes to cut 13 academic programs, following a pattern of declining enrollment and a $10 million structural deficit.

This move mirrors the recent adjustments made by other SUNY schools, including SUNY Potsdam, which cut 14 programs less than four months ago.

SUNY Fredonia President Stephen Kolison Jr. emphasized the urgency of adapting to these challenges, noting that the college’s expenditures far exceed its revenues, a situation unsustainable for the institution, according to the Times Union.

Other colleges like the College of Saint Rose in Albany and Cazenovia College near Syracuse have either closed or made closure announcements in recent months.

SUNY Fredonia’s decision to cut programs is driven by low student enrollment in certain areas, with some programs having as few as one student enrolled. Students enrolled in those programs will have the chance to leave, officials said.

While Fredonia will be cutting certain programs, it also plans to introduce new master’s programs in clinical mental health counseling and accounting.
