Mark Mitri, a bastion of the WNY bicycling community, dies in Cheektowaga fire

A fire last week in Cheektowaga claimed the life of a man who was well-known to bicycling enthusiasts in Western New York.

Mark Mitri rode a Kawasaki Vulcan 750 motorcycle for the last half-dozen years and planned to trade up this year to a Harley-Davidson. The rise of bicycle riding in the region changed his mind. Mark Mitri, 64, an original leader of the Slow Spokes Buffalo bicycling group and a familiar presence on group rides across the region, died in the garage he used as his business office and “man cave” on Westvale Court, said his brother, Rick.

Mitri’s longtime girlfriend, Patti Marshall, called to report the fire shortly after 1:30 a.m.

Town Police Chief Brian Coons said Wednesday that investigators believe Mitri, who was pronounced dead at the scene, succumbed to smoke inhalation. The fire was not reported by Cheektowaga…
