East Aurora, N.Y. — Max, help us! We’re feeling!
An iconic store in Upstate New York is welcoming Grinches and Whos to check out a special holiday display made up of items from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. The props and costumes — all authentic items from the 2000 movie starring Jim Carrey — are in the front windows of Vidler’s 5 & 10, an East Aurora shop that bills itself as the world’s largest five-and-dime variety store.
Customers and pedestrians strolling down Main Street can see the Grinch in a Santa coat, baby Grinch in a wooden high chair and Max donning a reindeer horn in the tall glass windows below Vidler’s marquee.
“We’re delighted that collector David Howes has some of his extensive array of Grinch costumes and props on display in our main front windows,” the shop wrote in a Facebook post.
David Howe is an East Aurora resident known for sharing his extensive collection of Grinch memorabilia with his community. And the items in the window displays aren’t the only Grinchy artifacts he’s sharing with the variety store.
The giant sleigh Carrey steered in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” will be behind the store Saturday and Sunday, as long as the weather cooperates, Vidler’s said.
Vidler’s 5 & 10, a family-run shop, has been in business since 1930. It sells old-fashioned sweets, toys, Vidler’s/East Aurora souvenirs, specialty foods and more.
The shop has also become a popular place for Christmas movies to be filmed. “A Royal Christmas Holiday”, the latest holiday movie shot at Vidler’s and in East Aurora, will premiere Dec. 23 on the Great American Family network, co-owner Don Vidler said.
