Police said Friday a 20-year-old moped driver died after a truck driver struck him in Greenpoint on Thursday.
Officers responded to a motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Greenpoint and Kingsland avenues at around 7 a.m. Thursday, according to the NYPD. A preliminary investigation found the 58-year-old truck driver was turning right from Greenpoint Avenue onto Kingsland Avenue when he collided into the moped, launching the moped driver onto the roadbed.
Police identified the moped driver as Queens resident Oscar Delarosa. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he was pronounced dead. The truck driver remained on the scene near the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge, according to police.
An investigation by the NYPDโs Highway Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing. No arrests have been made.
City Councilmember Lincoln Restler of Brooklyn said in a statement the city needed to make the area where the collision occurred safer.
โIt’s absolutely heartbreaking to keep seeing tragedies like this in Greenpoint,โ said New York state Sen. Kristin Gonzalez, who also represents parts of Brooklyn.
More than 230 people have died in traffic crashes across the city this year, compared to more than 260 total last year, according to official data.
