Giants tried to lure retired four-time Super Bowl champion: Would’ve been a ‘home run’

Rob Gronkowski has not played a snap since the 2021 season and insists he’s retired, but that hasn’t stopped NFL teams from petitioning him to come back.

The four-time Super Bowl champion revealed the latest efforts to lure him to the NFL came last offseason via the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Giants.

“First off, I mean it’s kind of out there, it was the Giants because of Brian Daboll,” Gronkowski said on Friday’s “Pardon My Take” podcast. “He was my position coach for three years (in New England), and I loved having him as my position coach, man. He was just a great guy, great attitude, brought the juice to the table every single time. But I mean he knew it was kind of like a home run. …

“He was like, ‘Come out, come out. Come with us. You and Darren Waller, you guys would be a great duo.’ I was like, ‘I know we would be but, bro, I’m good. I’m all done.’”

Gronkowski, 34, clearly has a fondness for Daboll as he mentioned him in an “Up & Adams Show” appearance in August as the coach who would have the best chance of convincing him to return to the NFL. He also acknowledged that a two-tight end situation with Waller would have the potential to be “unstoppable.”

In 11 seasons, the former tight end — who has twice retired — reached five Pro Bowls and made four All-Pro teams as he accumulated 621 catches for 9,286 yards and 92 touchdowns in 143 games.

Even with inspired play from rookie Tommy DeVito, the 4-8 Giants rank 29th in passing touchdowns with 11. Gronkowski certainly would’ve helped.
