It won’t be a major winter weather event for most of the Finger Lakes or Central New York. However, there will be enough mixed precipitation and snow through the evening hours that the National Weather Service has issued some advisories.
A Winter Weather Advisory is active for Cayuga, Tompkins, Onondaga, and Cortland counties. All areas east of those locations are also in a Winter Weather Advisory or Winter Storm Warning. While those eastern-most locations will see 8+ inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service, advised areas will see 1-3 inches of snow.
Rain showers this evening will transition to mixed precipitation and eventually snow. Snow will likely be heaviest during the morning commute.
So, if you’re traveling toward Syracuse on the Thruway during the first half of the day, or going to be on the I-81 corridor give yourself extra time.
The advisories and warnings expire during the evening hours.
Lake effect snow is expected to follow this system bringing rain-to-snow across Central New York, but it won’t be a major event.
