STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. โ€” Staten Island elementary students recently held a candy drive for veterans.

Students at PS 6 in Tottenville donated their Halloween candy, which was sent to veterans with some help from the South Shore Rotary. The drive was hosted by the schoolโ€™s Community Club, which was formed this year by fifth-grade teacher Tiffany Sienicki. Students in the club went to each classroom to promote the drive and collect candy.

All of the fifth-grade teachers actively provided support for the drive, according to Sienicki, as students were given different jobs to make the drive as youth-led as possible. Students acted as collectors, advertisers, writers, packagers and announcers. The drive also acted as a learning experience, as students were able to apply math lessons to their efforts.

Students wrote scripts for a daily newscast โ€” advertising the candy collection through videos played throughout the school. They also provided updates on the progress of the drive, which Sienicki said helped provide more incentive to bring candy in to donate.

About 13 boxes were filled with candy by the end of the drive.

The South Shore Rotary Club partnered with the school and picked up the donated candy last month. The club then dropped the boxes of candy off at Nourish the Service in Fort Wadsworth.
