Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio has torn his ACL and will need surgery, after leaving his Dominican Winter League game with a knee injury on Monday, according to SNYโs Andy Martino.
Mauricio had been set to compete with Brett Baty and Mark Vientos for the third base position this year.
Taking a lead off of first during Mondayโs game for Tigres del Licey, Mauricio took a couple of hard strides then stopped and turned before he went down on the dirt. Three staff members came out to escort Mauricio off the field, and he was able to walk on his own.
In 26 games for the Mets last year, Mauricio hit .248 with a .643 OPS and two home runs.
Mauricio, 22, was batting .292/.346/.506 with 23 home runs and 24 steals in Triple-A before he was called up when rosters expanded in September.
