New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson flashed the ability on Sunday that made him the No. 2 overall pick in 2021. And perhaps it’s the type of performance that could intrigue a trade partner — if the Jets fulfill their side of an agreement with Wilson that was reported Saturday — this offseason.
Boomer Esiason, the former three-season Jets QB and 1998 MVP with the Cincinnati Bengals, has an idea about where Wilson could thrive.
“He’s gonna end up in Kansas City with Andy Reid,” Esiason said Monday on WFAN, per Audacy. “Andy Reid is gonna pick him up, take him off the scrap heap and turn him into a quarterback.”
Wilson led the Jets to a 30-6 win after completing 27 of 36 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns on the heels of an impressive second half: 18 of 21 for 207 yards and two touchdowns.
The best performance of his career came after a report during the week from The Athletic that Wilson was reluctant to start this week after being inactive in Weeks 12 and 13 in favor of Tim Boyle, who has since been waived, and Trevor Siemian. Then, on Saturday, the Deseret News reported that Wilson was told last month following his benching that he would be traded in a mutually agreed split with coach Robert Saleh, who did not deny The Athletic’s report but said Sunday that “anything can happen” related to Wilson being on the roster next season.
Reid is considered one of the best offensive minds in the NFL; over his last seven seasons, thanks in large part to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, his offenses have ranked no lower than No. 7 in passing yards and within the top 10 in passing touchdowns.
Esiason has not been a fan of Wilson, remarking in October that he lacks “overall decision-making” on the field and saying in November that he doesn’t ‘have what it takes’ to succeed in New York.
Who could blame him for those opinions? Even after Sunday’s surprising showing, Wilson has a career 12-20 record with a 57.2% completion rate, 6,267 yards passing,…
