The Cayuga County Legislature concluded its annual proceedings with the approval of a $188.2 million budget for 2024, marking a 9.3% increase from the previous yearโs $172.1 million budget.
The new budget incorporates a 2% rise in the property tax levy, elevating it from $42.7 million to $43.5 million.
Despite overall support, the budget faced opposition from three Democratic legislators โ Elane Daly, Aileen McNabb-Coleman, and Heidi Nightengale, according to The Citizen.
The dissent primarily stemmed from the allocation of $334,000 to the Cayuga County Public Utility Service Agency (CCPUSA), a decision met with reservations by McNabb-Coleman and Nightengale due to the perceived lack of discussion and planning regarding the use of public funds.
The Legislatureโs session involved various amendments and discussions about the allocation of the countyโs remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, with a portion being directed towards the sheriffโs office for a new patrol boat and water source engineering work.
Economic development funding was another focal point, with $375,000 earmarked for this purpose, although the decision on the exact allocation between the Cayuga Economic Development Agency (CEDA) and the Industrial Development Agency (IDA) remains undisclosed.
The Legislatureโs 2024 session concluded with Chairman David Gould acknowledging outgoing members, setting the stage for a restructured Legislature with a Democratic majority, set to convene on January 2.
