NEW ORLEANS — Tommy DeVito’s three-game winning streak ended Sunday — but his time as the Giants’ starting quarterback didn’t.
After a 24-6 loss at the Saints in which his team managed just two field goals, Giants coach Brian Daboll said DeVito would continue to start.
He is now 3-2 as the starter. He lost in Dallas in his debut, then beat Washington, New England, and Green Bay — before stumbling in New Orleans.
The Giants’ next game is on Christmas, next Monday, at the Eagles.
The Giants on Sunday fell to 5-9, clinched a losing record, and crushed their playoff hopes. They now have a 1% chance of making it, according to The New York Times. Even if they somehow win out, they’re still projected to have just a 40% chance.
The Giants managed 193 yards Sunday, when the Saints sacked DeVito seven times. He threw for 177 yards and had a 72.8 quarterback rating. Clearly, the Giants didn’t protect him well enough.
DeVito was checked for a concussion late in the first half, and Tyrod Taylor — the Giants’ usual No. 2 quarterback — replaced him briefly. But DeVito was cleared and returned to the game.
Taylor is now healthy, after missing four games with broken ribs. He was healthy last week, too. But Daboll decided to continue starting DeVito versus the Packers last Monday night.
And DeVito justified that decision by leading a shocking, game-winning field goal drive in the final minute and a half, further boosting his overnight celebrity status.
DeVito wasn’t nearly as effective Sunday in New Orleans, against a legit defense.
Still, he will remain the Giants’ starting quarterback — at least for the Christmas matchup with the Eagles in Philadelphia.
