Seneca County put on the clock to address wastewater treatment plant violations

Seneca County has been issued notices of violation by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) regarding its failure to submit required interim status reports on upgrades to two wastewater treatment plants.

The Finger Lakes Times reports the plants in question are located in the Seneca County Sewer District No. 1 in Willard and the Sewer District No. 2 at the Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus.

The DEC has set a deadline of January 10 for the county to detail actions taken since February 13, 2023, to establish a compliance schedule for the necessary upgrades and to outline the timeline for submitting the engineering reports for these upgrades.

The violations stem from the countyโ€™s non-compliance with the State Pollutants Discharge Elimination System permits, which mandated regular interim status reports starting January 1, 2022, and continuing every nine months until the completion of the plant upgrades.
