CATSKILL – A 76-year-old Leeds woman died on Monday when her car became submerged in water near Cauterskill Road in Catskill when the torrential rains caused flooding conditions in the region.
The victim was identified as MaryAnn Hyland.
State Police from the Catskill barracks had responded to a 911 call at around 10:15 a.m. that a vehicle had become submerged in water.
When troopers arrived on the scene, they saw a white 2019 Chevrolet SUV off the east shoulder of the roadway submerged in water. They attempted to reach it but due to heavy water flow, they could not get to it.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was carried away by water and pulled off the road before coming to rest against trees.
A State Police Underwater Recovery Team responded with an airboat and began recovery operations, locating Hyland in the driver’s seat. She was removed from the vehicle and transported to Ellis Hospital in Schenectady.
