The Hobart College basketball team improved to 8-0 with a 78-58 win over Wells College in Bristol Gymnasium this afternoon. The Statesmen were led by the twin 18-point performances of juniorย Carter Meshanicย and first-yearย Alex Moesch.
Meshanic paced all scorers in the first half with 12 points, while Moesch was the second halfโs leading scorer with a dozen. They were joined in double figures by juniorsย Aidan Rodgersย andย Pat Healy, who produced 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Meshanic led the Statesmen to a 33-25 advantage on the glass with a game-high eight rebounds, while Rodgers accounted for five of Hobartโs 15 assists in the game.
The Express (1-10) had two players reach double digits. Alex Grant posted a team-high 15 points and Evan Hauser added 14 points. Grant blocked a pair of shots as did Billy McCrae. Terrance Clayton-Murphy had a team-high five assists to go with seven points.
KEY STATISTICS
- Hobart shot a season-high 52.5% from the floor. Meshanic was 9-of-15 shooting, while Moesch was 6-of-7.
- The Statesmen attempted a season-low eight free throws, but made all eight, marking their first perfect performance at the line since Jan. 28, 2022 (13-13 vs. Ithaca).
- Hobart matched its season-low with just eight turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Most of the first half was a one or two possession game, until Hobart started to heat up in the final two minutes.
- The Statesmen ended the opening 20 minutes on a 9-3 run that turned a 29-26 lead into a 38-29 advantage heading into the break.
- Healy sparked the surge with a dunk and Moesch capped the run with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
- Wells made a push early in the second half, scoring six straight points to pull within three of Hobart.
- The Statesmen responded to the threat with a 19-6 run over the next seven minutes, pushing their lead into double digits where it stayed for the remainder of the game.
