A woman was found guilty by a Superior Court judge on Tuesday in the killing of her four-year-old son who police found in her bed with 17 stab wounds.
Elina Gutti, 38, of South Bound Brook, was convicted of first-degree murder and weapons offenses following a week-long bench trial, a trial with no jury where the judge decides the verdict.
Gutti called 911 at 2:28 a.m. on Feb. 6, 2021, and told the operator that she had woken up to find cuts on her wrists, according to the Somerset County Prosecutorโs Office. Police responding to her home determined that the wounds were minor, but then found Guttiโs four-year-old son, Aiden Singhania, deceased in the same bed, officials said.
The boy had suffered 17 stab wounds to the neck area, authorities said. A kitchen knife found on the floor of the bedroom was determined to be the murder weapon, according to prosecutors.
An autopsy by the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examinerโs Office determined the cause of death to be multiple incised wounds to the neck area and the manner of death to be homicide.
After the boyโs death, his father, who is Guttโs ex-husband, told detectives that he had recently requested a paternity test, with the agreement that he would receive full custody of the child if the test confirmed him as the father, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
He also told authorities that Gutti had recently texted him saying that she was feeling depressed, charging documents said.
As part of her conviction, Gutti is required to serve a life sentence with no parole eligibility in a maximum-security prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for January 16.
