STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Police are investigating a report that an idling car was stolen outside a coffee shop on a major street in Dongan Hills during the morning rush hour on Wednesday, according to sources.
A grey Acura reportedly was taken by an unknown individual from a rear parking lot at 1717 Richmond Road at about 6:55 a.m., according to a spokeswoman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
A Starbucks is located at the address provided by police.
A man told police that he parked his push-start vehicle but left the doors unlocked and the engine running. The victim kept his key fob with him when he left the vehicle at that location, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.
Police searched the area for the vehicle but did not find it. The investigation continues and no arrests have been made, the police spokeswoman said.
IDLING CAR STOLEN LAST WEDNESDAY
A similar incident occurred a week ago in Tompkinsville when a black, 2009 Toyota Sienna allegedly was stolen at about 8:50 a.m. on Dec. 13 at Victory Boulevard and Cebra Avenue, according to a spokesman for the NYPD.
The keys were inside the Toyota and it was left running by its male owner, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.
Police allege they recovered a loaded gun from one of the suspects who was part of a group that allegedly stole the Toyota.
Alfredo Marquez, 21, of Warren Street in the Stapleton Houses, and Mark Thompson, 19, of Richmond Road in the Berry Houses, were arrested that same day in connection with the Toyota, according to the criminal complaint and police.
Authorities allege that three suspects, including one who remains at large, entered the car and Marquez drove the SUV away from the location, the complaint alleges. About an hour later, police located Marquez in the vicinity of Mulberry Avenue and Rockville Avenue in New Springville.
Emergency radio transmissions indicated that the car was abandoned in New Springville.
